4-Methyl benzaldehyde, also known as p-tolualdehyde or p-methyl benzaldehyde, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H4(CH3)CHO. It is a derivative of benzaldehyde where a methyl group is attached to the para position relative to the aldehyde group. This colorless liquid has a characteristic almond-like odor and is an important intermediate in organic synthesis. Organic synthesis intermediates are used as transparent agents for plastic nucleation, synthetic dyes, pharmaceuticals, etc. p-Tolualdehyde may be employed as growth substrate in the culture medium of the strains of Pseudomonas putida; p-Tolualdehyde may be used in the preparation of (E)-3-(4-methyl-phen-yl)-1-(1,3-thia-zol-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-one. It may be used in the preparation of (Z)-trisubstituted allylic alcohols. If exposed to air and prone to oxidation, turning yellow when exposed to light.
